January 16: Hearst castle, Roman pool, blue

January 17, 2013 § Leave a comment

We have driven by Hearst Castle many times, but today we actually visited. Oh, I am not easily impressed with lavish homes and outrageous men who build them, but there was so much detail to look at: gargoyles, statues, tiles… For some reason though, I kept thinking about Graceland all day (though Graceland is a cottage compared to this place).

My favorite part was the Roman pool, an indoor pool tiled all in blue. It was fascinating to photograph, too.

I loved the dim lighting and this particular shade of blue. It had an abandoned, eerie feeling, which the other, Neptune pool, certainly does not have. In case you are wondering what that one looks like, here it is:

Sometime today, also, the combination of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure finally clicked for me. I think I almost get it. Incredible.
