January 14: Virgin Mary and Elvis

We spent the day in Ventura today, doing nothing much: strolling, sightseeing, and drinking good coffee in a fine cafe. My favorite sights were a window dedicated to Elvis (it was his birthday two days ago)
and a Virgin Mary at the San Buenaventura mission. After all, it isn’t a trip to California if we don’t visit at least a mission or two. And to me, there are few things as calming as Catholic imagery.
And here is one for good luck: Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, who was very popular in Tucson when we lived there, and whom we all need to call on once in a while.
