December 17: Making cake

December 18, 2012 § Leave a comment

We got a version of the Red Hen book from the library that has a recipe for the hen’s cake at the end. The authors of the book are Rebecca and Ed Emberley. The recipe is so simple that a kid could make it. You know what? A kid did make it today — my kid. When going to school this morning, he expressed the desire to have a tea party in the afternoon, which I thought was a swell idea. When we got home from school, with the chilling wind outside and my continued fear of the whole world, having a tea party sounded like the best idea ever. I suggested making the cake from the book, and we did. He really did do most of the work. D. participated too, so that the hen wouldn’t eat the cake all by herself. J.  also decorated it with ice cream and homemade candy we got from a friend. The cake tasted great, though next time I would cut the sugar in butter by at least a quarter. If only life were always this simple and sweet.
