November 17: Paper marbling

November 18, 2012 § Leave a comment

We took J. to a paper marbling workshop today at an art gallery: recommended for ages 5 and up, two hours long, all for $5. It was excellent, for kids and adults alike, and worth well over $5. I tried to make marbled paper once and failed miserably. Today I learned that you need to mix the water with carrageenan to get the right density. J. did most of the work, though D. and I tried a few things ourselves. The process is meditative and requires patience. The workshop organizers promised to email ingredients and instructions to me, and as soon as they do, I intend to start marbling. Until then, here is a photo of what we did today

(you may recognize the book as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Behind the Looking Glass)

and a time lapse video of a professional Ebru artist (Ebru is the Turkish name for the art, I believe).
